IRB submissions and proper routing

$

In order to submit your IRB applications for your research projects through iMedRIS, you must have the appropriate signatures. This includes the signature of your advisor. Please be sure that the following persons sign off on the initial submission:

PI
Co-PI
Advisor
Departmental Review Chair (CRC)Department Head

The initial submission must go through the Departmental Review process. The appropriate Departmental signatures you will need are the Department Review Chair, Steven Waller and Department Head, Jeff Fairbrother.

The following video was created to illustrate how to select all appropriate persons who need to be connected to their study, and how to make sure they route it to those persons for signature. You must have a valid UT NetID to view this video on the DMS (Digital Media Services) Mediasite server. http://utkdms.utk.edu/Mediasite7/Play/a05002db21df4a5883d842f84f24cfa81d

IRB Tip #2

Make sure to use UT’s IRB new telephone number: (865) 974-7697

This pertains, for example, to your informed consent form, when you provide participants with contact information regarding the study.

You might still find the old number on some materials. If you use the old number on your initial IRB application, the board will send it back to you asking for a revision.

IRB Tip #3

Planning on doing research? Submit IRB application early!

In terms of timeline for review, UT’s IRB has the following goals for responding to initial submissions:

Exempt within five days
Expedited within three to five weeks
Full Board following the IRB meeting for which it was received (see http://irb.utk.edu/irb-review-dates/)

Note that these goals for turn-around only pertain to initial responses, which does not equal approval. The entire approval process might take much longer depending on the number of necessary revisions. You should plan for at least two months between initial submission and final approval.

In order to meet the goals stated above, our IRB is currently adding staff.

iMedRIS Training Sessions- Spring/Summer

The Office of Research and Engagement is offering new training sessions for the research compliance software, iMedRIS. IMedRIS is a web-based system that enables online application submission, real-time submission tracking, review, post- approval compliance activities, and data management. It is currently implemented for the university’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). Please contact Deanna Parker at dparker4@utk.edu or 974-2474 with any questions.

Friday, 4/10 3-4 PM Hodges Library, Room 605

Tuesday, 4/14 3-4 PM Blount Hall, Room A004

Wednesday, 4/22 2-3 PM  Blount Hall, Room A004

Wednesday, 5/27 2-3 PM  Blount Hall, Room A004

Thursday, 6/25 2-3 PM  Blount Hall, Room A004

Wednesday, 7/29 3-4 PM Blount Hall, Room A004

IRB Tip #5

$

0

If the IRB asked you to resubmit your application with changes, your faculty advisor, the DRC (Dr. Waller), and Department Head (Dr. Fairbrother) do not have to review and sign-off a second time after the initial sign-off. The key is to fully address all of the provisos before resending it directly back into the system.

If, however, you did not include the faculty advisor in the routing and sign-off in the initial submission, you will need to reroute the application through the system and get your adivsor’s sign-off.
